Smog Veil Clearing The Air Newsletter #102, August 2012

HERE WE GO:

This ones gonna be short and sweet.  Still some dates left to see Smog Veil bands in your town.  All the details are below.

Reviews are poring in for The Guns.  Crave Online said: "I love when albums like this happen because they bring me back to a time when music was just played for the love of it."  Agit Reader said of the studio cuts: "These 14 tracks are on par with anything by the band's contemporaries (Black Flag, Minor Threat, et al.), and it's a shame that it went unreleased during the bands time."  The double LP set was recently listed at #1 at KDVS and #6 at WPRB.

hearpen.com takes a break for the summer, so check out the last spring release, this time a live in-studio recording of Pere Ubu titled "Live At Grant Avenue".  Here's what we know of it:  William Blakeney invited Pere Ubu to record at Grant Avenue Studio (Hamilton, Ontario) October 9 2007, on the way to a concert performance in Toronto the same evening. The recording is live in the studio - no overdubs, no re-takes. Throw the equipment up, eat sandwiches, record and go. A select group attended as an audience.

Smog Veil Clearing The Air Newsletter #101, July 2012

HERE WE GO:

OK, so summer has set in, meaning we're sleepy as ever.  Celebrate the thermostat set on hell with some gigs this summer: Obnox makes a visit to Akron along with Tom Dark's new band Dead Federation.  David Thomas has also announced a special performance in September at the Sonic Circuits Fest as well as book preview and book launch performances.  Rocket From The Tombs has announced a Cleveland date for the fall.  All the details are below.

Mike Hammer of Rubber City Rebels and Hammer Damage fame has a new band, City Cousins.  City Cousins play big rig inspired rocking country out of Mike's hometown of Atlanta. Bringing it home like a beer run to Texarkana, they are sure to offend the sensibilities of your family.  The band's debut release, 'Movin' In' is available as an exclusive download-only release from Smog Veil.  Plus, they have a slate of gigs this summer culminating in an appearance at the Drive-In Invasion at the famous Starlight Drive-In in Atlanta.  Check out the record at your favorite download source.

Just in is a limited supply of The Broncs retrospective CD.  Formed after the break-up of the AK-47s, The Broncs were a popwer pop outit founded by Lair Matic, Rand Primos, The Pagans' Tim Allee, and Bart Hildebrandt.  Although the band only managed 1 live gig they had a short and prolific studio career, releasing one highly sought after 7-inch, and cuts on the Cleveland Confidential releases.  The CD includes 15 studio and rehearsal songs and photos from Mr. Cheese Borger.  We have just a couple left.

The Guns.  Hands down the top-end standard by which all other Northeast Ohio hardcore bands should be measured, Cleveland hardcore history could not have been the same without The Guns.  Scott Eakin and Dave Araca formed the band originally as a 2-piece, later adding to the lineup some amazing rippers in the form of Sean Saley, Bob Ries, and Scott Silverman. Though a couple compilation appearances is all they managed back in the day, this release collects those tracks plus all other studio recordings, as well as some choice live cuts. The LP also featuresVince Rancid's original cover art as commissioned by the band in the 80s. The numbers: double LP with free download code, 43 songs, 1 and only 1 pressing of 900 copies.

This Moment In Black History returns with a one-sided 7-inch release.  'Family Day At Euclid Beach' is the title of the release and the screamer of a song appearing here, augmented by an extra song available with the included free download code. Black vinyl, etched on the b-side.  Strictly limited to one pressing of 500 copies, this will not be repressed.

hearpen.com takes a break for the summer, so check out the last spring release, this time a live in-studio recording of Pere Ubu titled "Live At Grant Avenue".

Also of note: David Thomas has a debut book available now in a limited edition hardback and later as a wider release paperback.  A blog site for the book, with a video preview is now live.  Bob Holman of the Bowery Poetry Club says of the book, "The Book of Hieroglyphs": "I'm having the pleasure of previewing David (Pere Ubu) Thomas' book of nonpoems called The Book of Hieroglyphs. Thomas refuses to call the pieces in this book poetry, says they are not the songs. I really don't care what you call them, and it's true that they are unlike anything you've ever read before, but what they are are zings, stings, word bullets that tell stories so condensed that your mind changes on every syllable."  Preview and release performances are set, details below.

Smog Veil Clearing The Air Newsletter #100, June 2012

HERE WE GO:

OK, so summer has set in, meaning we're sleepy as ever.  Just a couple live dates to keep your game going, including this Saturday at Terra Community College in Fremont, Ohio: Obnox at the Jazz and American Music Fest.  David Thomas has also announced a special performance in September at the Sonic Circuits Fest.  All the details are below.

About 10 years ago, Smog Veil released a short film "Broke" and soundtrack directed and compiled by director Matt Goldman.  Well, Matt is directing a new project and needs yourKickstarter help.  The documentary is titled "The Last Safari".  The film follows international photojournalist Elizabeth L Gilbert as she journeys through remote Africa to present slide shows to tribal audiences whom she documented in her books a decade earlier. Many have never seen photos of themselves before, let alone a projection on a silver screen.  The Last Safari documents three parallel stories - The personal journey of Liz Gilbert as she sets out to discover what is left of traditional Africa; the young African crew members who accompany her, most of whom have never been outside Kenya's capital city of Nairobi;  and the individual stories of some of the tribal people Gilbert photographed as they reflect on how they see themselves and the rapidly changing world around them.  So, if you have some scratch sitting around, check outthe film's Kickstarter page which contains additional descriptions of the project, a list of perks that go along with contributions, and a short trailer.  90% has already been funded, but Matt needs 100%.  Please!

Smog Veil Clearing The Air Newsletter #99, May 2012

HERE WE GO:

OK, so lots of Smog Veil bands on the road this spring: Rocket From The Tombs tour of Europe restarts on May 18 in Paris (gigs through the May 24 appearance in Munich are going off as planned, but check our Facebook fan page to be sure), Ralph Carney's Serious Jass Project makes a trip to the UK,  The Guns special record release party is May 26.  All the details are below.  By the way, wondering what Cheetah is up to?  Well, congrats to the new creative director of Plowboy Records!

The numbers: double LP with free download code, 43 songs, 1 and only 1 pressing of 900 copies.

record release party has been set for Now That's Class in Cleveland on May 26, featuring sets from Dead FederationZero DefexKiller Of Sheep, and a tribute from Gun Parole (with some extra surprises as well).  NOTE: this item ships around June 1!

Note that this will ship around April 30.

THOR has a new download release.  Back in January, 2010, THOR made a live appearance in Baltimore backed by the rippers in Puling Teeth.  The result is Thor's Teeth.  Classic THOR cuts delivered with all the power you'd expect.  Originally released in an insanely limited 100 copy LP with gatefold sleeve (Dwid did the cover art), those are all gone.  THOR has also announced his headlining appearance at the Armstrong Metal Fest in July, details to follow.

hearpen.com is taking a break this month, so enjoy last month's release, this time a reissue of a long lost solo release from David Thomas titled "Vocal Performances."  Here's what we know of it: Vocal Performances was a 12-inch vinyl single released by Rough Trade Records US in 1981. 'Sloop John B' is the original vocal performance, recorded in a London hotel room, that was later overdubbed with drums and trumpet to appear on The Sound of the Sand & Other Songs of the Pedestrian.  Ralph Carney joins David on 1 track.

Smog Veil Clearing The Air Newsletter #98, April 2012

HERE WE GO:

OK, so lots of Smog Veil bands on the road this spring: Rocket From The Tombs has added a couple more dates in Europe, Ralph Carney's Serious Jass Project makes a trip to the UK, and The Buzz Clic Adventure makes their debut.  Gigs this month also from Obnox.  And, don't miss one of your last chances to ever see Face Value, this time in Columbus.  All the details are below.

Note that this will ship around April 30.

If you bought the Obnox debut LP, I'm Bleeding Now', thank you, it's all sold out (although some retailers may still have it, check around).  If you're a low budget freak that couldn't scrape together the scratch, we pressed up an equally cheap-ass cassette with a neat full-color insert available at a budget friendly price.  Same tuneage as the LP.

hearpen.com has a new release, this time a reissue of a long lost solo release from David Thomas titled "Vocal Performances."  Here's what we know of it: Vocal Performances was a 12-inch vinyl single released by Rough Trade Records US in 1981. Smog Veil Clearing The Air Newsletter #97, March 2012

HERE WE GO:

OK, so lots of Smog Veil bands on the road this spring, plenty of opportunties to see Obnox at SXSW, Rocket From The Tombs has added a couple more dates in Europe, Ralph Carney's Serious Jass Project makes a trip to the UK, and Butcher Boys play St. Patrick's Day.  All the details are below.

We have a new download release, this time from our friends in Ireland, the always amazing Estel.   Titled 'A Massive, Glorious, Uphill Shit Fight", this is the band's first new release in 5 years.  Uncomprimising as previous efforts and full of prog free jazz collisions.  Reviewed as "...like the Wurlitzer soundtrack to some innocent undulating fairground ride tweaked by evil carnies to mangle it's patrons when least expected...", this is one not to miss.  Find it at your favorite download site.

Lair "Keith" Matic played in numerous Cleveland bands, and is best known for his work with AK-47s and Broncs, landing tracks on the legendary Cleveland Confidential releases.  Lair also was in the earliest Offbeats lineup, and his recordings with that band appear on the Smog Veil retrospective 'Dumb Looks Still Free'.  Lair's recordings actually pop up all over the Smog Veil discography from our Lurid release to the Pie and Ears comps.  Lair died from cancer in October 2011. In September he recorded these two cuts, knowing the end was near. Lair gathered up three of his dear friends - Nick Summa (Floydband), Cheese Borger (Pink Holes) and Steve-O (Death Of Samantha) - to record with under the name Lair Matic Assembly.  "Out Of My Hands" and the flip side "To My Friends" which is as beautiful a farewell as you will ever hear.  We're really pleased to be able to release this very last recording, because every thing Lair ever did, including this record, was special.  Limited to a single pressing on black vinyl, free download code included, all our profits go to the Hospice of the Western Reserve.

hearpen.com has a new release, this time from David Thomas and 2 pale boys, a live set titled 'Brunswick Parking Lot'.  Here's what we know: Recorded July 5 2004 at VPRO Studios, Amsterdam, Netherlands, for the program "Zeldzaam.Dwars." The band soundman was Gagarin.

Smog Veil Clearing The Air Newsletter #96, February 2012

HERE WE GO:

No, you weren't dreaming, we actually did take a break in January and didn't bother to tell you or send out a newsletter.

OK, so on to it.  Lots of news to report, and we'll start with a new 7-inch release. a final testament of sorts from our departed friend, Lair Matic.

Rocket From The Tombs 'Barfly' LP is out and if you haven't already grabbed it, you should asap.  Plus, the band has announced, among other things, a May tour of Europe.  There's no reason for me to repeat all the news surrounding the band, you can check it out at the band'sblog.  Scroll down beyond the news on our new download release to find even more Rocket From The Tombs news...

We also have a new download release licensed to use from our friends at Target Earth Recordsin Tokyo.  Rockbottom returns with another fantastic garage pop punk ripper that'll have you thinking 20/20 has reformed under a psuedonym in Japan.  Entitled 'Revenge', get this 11 song release at your favorite download store.

hearpen.com has a new release, this time it's the equivelent of making a journey to the center of the Earth to find an amazing never before seen world.  It's from Rocket From The Tombs, it's the long lost and never before released in any format recording from the December 1974 Extermination Night, and here's what we know:  This is the debut of what's known as the "original" Rocket From The Tombs (actually v.3.1) recorded December 22 1974 at the Special Extermination Music Night at the Viking Saloon.  Craig Bell at this point had been a member of the band for about a month but was forbidden to play in RFTT by the leader of Mirrors. Three of these songs, Rich Bitch, Gasoline and New York Stars, are unique to this recording.  (I will add as well, that the extensive Peter Laughner research that has been undertaken by Smog Veil and its crew of researchers has found that these 3 songs were never again recorded by Peter...)  Our friend, John Morton, did the artwork, based upon an original flyer of his for the event.  A PDF of additional liner notes is also contained within the download.
