HERE WE GO:
OK, so summer has set in, meaning we're sleepy as ever. Celebrate the thermostat set on hell with some gigs this summer: Obnox makes a visit to Akron along with Tom Dark's new band Dead Federation. David Thomas has also announced a special performance in September at the Sonic Circuits Fest as well as book preview and book launch performances. Rocket From The Tombs has announced a Cleveland date for the fall. All the details are below.
Mike Hammer of Rubber City Rebels and Hammer Damage fame has a new band, City Cousins. City Cousins play big rig inspired rocking country out of Mike's hometown of Atlanta. Bringing it home like a beer run to Texarkana, they are sure to offend the sensibilities of your family. The band's debut release, 'Movin' In' is available as an exclusive download-only release from Smog Veil. Plus, they have a slate of gigs this summer culminating in an appearance at the Drive-In Invasion at the famous Starlight Drive-In in Atlanta. Check out the record at your favorite download source.
Just in is a limited supply of The Broncs retrospective CD. Formed after the break-up of the AK-47s, The Broncs were a popwer pop outit founded by Lair Matic, Rand Primos, The Pagans' Tim Allee, and Bart Hildebrandt. Although the band only managed 1 live gig they had a short and prolific studio career, releasing one highly sought after 7-inch, and cuts on the Cleveland Confidential releases. The CD includes 15 studio and rehearsal songs and photos from Mr. Cheese Borger. We have just a couple left.
The Guns. Hands down the top-end standard by which all other Northeast Ohio hardcore bands should be measured, Cleveland hardcore history could not have been the same without The Guns. Scott Eakin and Dave Araca formed the band originally as a 2-piece, later adding to the lineup some amazing rippers in the form of Sean Saley, Bob Ries, and Scott Silverman. Though a couple compilation appearances is all they managed back in the day, this release collects those tracks plus all other studio recordings, as well as some choice live cuts. The LP also featuresVince Rancid's original cover art as commissioned by the band in the 80s. The numbers: double LP with free download code, 43 songs, 1 and only 1 pressing of 900 copies.
This Moment In Black History returns with a one-sided 7-inch release. 'Family Day At Euclid Beach' is the title of the release and the screamer of a song appearing here, augmented by an extra song available with the included free download code. Black vinyl, etched on the b-side. Strictly limited to one pressing of 500 copies, this will not be repressed.
hearpen.com takes a break for the summer, so check out the last spring release, this time a live in-studio recording of Pere Ubu titled "Live At Grant Avenue". Here's what we know of it: William Blakeney invited Pere Ubu to record at Grant Avenue Studio (Hamilton, Ontario) October 9 2007, on the way to a concert performance in Toronto the same evening. The recording is live in the studio - no overdubs, no re-takes. Throw the equipment up, eat sandwiches, record and go. A select group attended as an audience.
Also of note: David Thomas has a debut book available now in a limited edition hardback and later as a wider release paperback. A blog site for the book, with a video preview is now live. Bob Holman of the Bowery Poetry Club says of the book, "The Book of Hieroglyphs": "I'm having the pleasure of previewing David (Pere Ubu) Thomas' book of nonpoems called The Book of Hieroglyphs. Thomas refuses to call the pieces in this book poetry, says they are not the songs. I really don't care what you call them, and it's true that they are unlike anything you've ever read before, but what they are are zings, stings, word bullets that tell stories so condensed that your mind changes on every syllable." Preview and release performances are set, details below.
